Understanding the Deep Plane Facelift
Procedure
A deep plane facelift repositions the entire natural cheek pad SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) and the ligaments below unlike SMAS Facelifts. The procedure restores the cheek to its original position to improve hollowness under the eye area and create more definition in the cheek area, jawline, and neck. This technique has been refined over time, and results in no longer healing than other techniques.
Benefits
Because the deep plane facelift repositions the entire SMAS layer and uses a vertical lifting technique, results look more natural and last longer than SMAS facelifts. With less skin tension, you won't have to worry about the tight, pulled look. The procedure restores natural volume, elevates the cheek area, lifts the mid-face region, softens nasolabial folds, and improves definition.
Balance
Dr. David Sherris often combines his deep plane lifts with a neck lift to rejuvenate the face and neck in a single procedure for our Buffalo patients. Your neck lift will target the underlying muscles of the neck, excess fat, and skin laxity to create a smoother, more defined jawline and neck. This comprehensive approach brings balance to the face and neck for a more youthful appearance.

Finding the Perfect Solution for You
If you’re not a good candidate for a deep plane facelift, Dr. Sherris has other options:

Injectables
Often, women in their mid-thirties who want a facelift are better candidates for injectable treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic, fillers and Sculptra®. These treatments can keep you youthful until you qualify for a facelift by:
- Smoothing facial wrinkles
- Slowing the formation of wrinkles
- Stimulating collagen production
- Plumping lips
- Adding volume to the cheeks
- Contouring the jawline
- Filling tear troughs
Mini Facelift
Patients in their early forties can look more youthful and rejuvenated with injectable fillers and BOTOX®. As aging continues, the benefit of these treatments lessens. Patients experience filler fatigue and want a more rejuvenated cost-effective treatment. If you’re a patient in your forties with a minimal amount of sagging skin and deepening nasolabial folds who is no longer seeing the desired effects from injectables and other nonsurgical treatments, you may be a good candidate for a mini facelift. Candidates include those who:
- Have mildly loose skin, mildly drooping cheeks, or a loose neck
- Look older than their age and show more advanced signs of early aging
- Want to refresh their features for a more youthful appearance
- Want a more cost-effective and longer-lasting procedure than nonsurgical treatments can provide
- Want a quicker recovery
- Too early for a deep plane lift but want to age more youthfully

SMAS Facelift
SMAS facelifts are often the best option for thin patients, patients with heavily wrinkled skin, or patients with heavy sun damage who wish to reduce the signs of aging. Almost all of Dr. Sherris’s facelifts involve a neck lift for more natural and comprehensive results.
- Many patients can benefit from a SMAS facelift, but patients between the ages of 40 and 70 typically see the most dramatic results.
- A facelift can make you look 10-15 years younger in just a few hours.

FAQ About Facelifts
Does the deep plane facelift procedure hurt?
During your surgery, our team will administer anesthesia to keep you comfortable and pain-free. As with any surgery, post-operative discomfort can be managed with pain medication. You will be provided with instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery. Typically, patients describe the discomfort as mild.
How long does it take to recover?
Many patients feel well enough to return to their normal activities after about two weeks, though some residual swelling and bruising may be present. Dr. Sherris will provide you with post-op instructions to aid you in your recovery.
When can I expect results?
Once your initial swelling and bruises subside, you’ll have an idea of your final results. The final result usually takes several months or longer to fully realize. The results will last for years, but the natural aging process will change your face over time. However, you’ll always look younger than you would have if you hadn’t received a facelift.
How does a deep plane differ from a SMAS facelift?
Unlike a deep plane facelift, a SMAS facelift tightens the SMAS but does not reposition it. This can result in a more pulled-back or “wind-blown” look. The deep plane technique creates a more natural and youthful look by re-positioning the entire SMAS. Dr. Sherris however offers a specialized high SMAS facelift for patients who do not need their cheek area lifted but just have excess skin laxity and wrinkles. This technique avoids the pulled look by tightening deeper and higher SMAS.
Why do some celebrities look bad with a facelift?
Some celebrities receive too many facelifts or facial procedures. Dr. Sherris knows that when done correctly, facelifts and even second facelifts years later will yield natural youthful results.
